What is EMS?

EMS stands for Electro Muscle Stimulation. This new fitness training method involves targeting and stimulating the muscles from the outside using electrical impulses.

You already have electrical stimuli in your muscles by nature. However, EMS additionally amplifies these endogenous stimuli from the outside. This makes the training so effective!

What can you achievewith EMS training?

EMS has been applied for many years in the fields of physiotherapy and competitive sports. The training intensity comes from gentle electrical stimulation, not heavy loads (such as weights/dumbells), so EMS training puts no additional strain on your joints or ligaments.

It has been scientifically proven that EMS training achieves better results than conventional exercise and can help improve your strength, body shape and stamina in a number of ways:

Weight and fat reduction

EMS promotes a high level of metabolic activity during, and for many hours after, a training session. The higher your metabolism, the better your body will burn fat and build lean muscle mass.

For women, EMS training has been proven to reduce the size of common problem areas, such as around the waist, hips and thighs. At the same time, it will firm up the chest and arms.

For men, EMS training reduces waist size, whilst developing the arm, chest, back and leg muscles.

Effects of muscle stimulation on strength capacity

EMS can produce a stronger contraction of the muscle than voluntary force development. Type 2 fast-twitch muscle fibers and core muscles have also been shown to be enhanced.

Maximum strength and endurance

Untrained individuals can only access about 40 to 70% of their strength potential voluntarily. EMS reduces this strength deficit between maximum and absolute strength, because the motor units are better synchronized and activated by EMS. Strength endurance has also been shown to increase noticeably with EMS.

Muscle building (hypertrophy)

The aforementioned maximum strength gains through EMS are essentially due to an increase in muscle mass. Increases in the circumference of the chest, arms and legs are often noticeable after just a few training sessions.

Better posture, stronger back

Imbalances in the postural muscles of the back, abdomen, and pelvic floor are common ailments. BODY TIME and its gyms specialise exclusively in EMS & smart weight loss solutions. That’s why we don’t have an elaborate pricing system where EMS is added to the basic fee as an expensive extra service, but make our customers pay exclusively for this service.

In addition, our specialisation allows us to give each client their own personal trainer – a very important factor in achieving training goals. You don’t train alone for a minute with us – that’s almost unheard of anywhere else. And maybe I should also mention that not all EMS is the same: our system stimulates all muscle groups at the same time and also allows an individual dosage.

How does EMS Training work at BODY TIME?

EMS is technically a whole-body workout under a stimulation current. You should be aware that our muscles are already constantly stimulated by bioelectronics in normal everyday life.

This is exactly what EMS (Electro Muscle Stimulation) makes use of: it amplifies exactly this natural effect of the body through additional, hardly noticeable current from the outside. And this leads to stronger, more intense muscle contractions than with conventional training.

Where is already intensively worked with EMS?

EMS training has already proven itself over several decades in physiotherapy, medicine and competitive sports. It is mainly used when muscular imbalances need to be corrected, back pain alleviated, the pelvic floor muscles strengthened and blood circulation promoted.

In high-performance sports, EMS training is used for optimal training stimulation of the muscles that lead the movement.

What does sport science have to say about EMS?

Numerous studies by the Universities of Bayreuth (2002-2003) and Erlangen-Nuremberg (2009), the German Sport University Cologne (2008) and the Heart Clinic Bad Oeynhausen (2010) show the effectiveness of EMS training. Even untrained people achieve visible and noticeable results in a short time with an expenditure of time of fifteen to twenty minutes per week.

By the way, not only for general muscle building: EMS also works excellently when certain focal points are to be set, e.g. buttocks, abdomen or back. In addition, very important: EMS is – unlike conventional training – no strain on the joints.


Is it possible to do EMS in the GYM on a long term basis?

Yes, the training should be set up for the long term and with the same regularity as conventional training. Maintaining the performance of the muscles is only possible with regular training.

If you stop training for a longer period of time, the muscles will return to their original condition. Just as with conventional strength training.

Why is EMS Training so extraordinarily efficient?

During the EMS whole-body training in the BODY TIME clubs, more than 90% of the muscle fibres are contracted at the same time. And that’s with every contraction!

In contrast to conventional strength training, the deeper lying muscles are also addressed. This improves intra- and intermuscular coordination whilst the training is also particularly intense and fast.

Is stimulation current dangerous during EMS Training in the GYM?

No. Training or therapy with low-frequency stimulation current is not dangerous. Why? Our muscles are constantly working. Every movement is accompanied by electrical charges.

When training with stimulation current, our natural electrical charges are merely amplified by the additional stimulus from the outside – directly over the nerve to the muscle. The body, therefore, does not perceive this stimulus as foreign.

What are the prerequisites for using EMS?

None in particular. Every healthy person can use EMS profitably.

There are certain target groups where EMS training is not advisable, such as those who should not be exposed to physical stress or engage in sports.

This can include people with acute febrile illnesses, pacemakers, etc.

How many people train already in BODY TIME Clubs?

Over 3,600 – and new participants join every month. Today, approximately 16,000 personal training sessions are carried out in over 35 BODY TIME locations every month.

How much time can I save on training with BODY TIME?

With the usual fitness training, you need about one to one and a half hours per training session – including warm-up. And usually three to six times a week. This easily adds up to twelve hours of training time per week, which you spend in the gym. For most people, that’s not possible in the long run.

Time is a precious commodity. If you just want to stay fit, you can get a lot done with just one session a month. If you want more, you have to come a little more often. However: more than one 20 minute session per week does not make sense, even with highly ambitious goals. So, in any case, you save many hours in the Bodystreet gyms compared to a conventional workout.
